Teatro alla Scala Announces Highly Anticipated 2023-2024 Season




Teatro alla Scala has unveiled its lineup for its highly anticipated 2023-2024 season.


 

OPERAS


The season kicks off with a production of Verdi's "Don Carlo," featuring a star-studded cast including René Pape, Francesco Meli, Luca Salsi, Ain Anger, Anna Netrebko, and Elīna Garanča. The opera will be conducted by Riccardo Chailly and directed by Lluis Pasqual. Maria Jose Siri and Ekaterina Semenchuk will perform in the final two shows. The performances are scheduled from December 7, 2023, to January 2, 2024.


Sonya Yoncheva takes the lead in Cherubini's "Medée" in a new production by Damiano Michieletto. Michele Gamba will conduct the opera, which also features Stanislas de Barbeyrac, Nahuel Di Pierro, Martina Russomanno, and Ambroisine Bré. The performances are scheduled from January 14 to 28, 2024.


Verdi's "Simon Boccanegra" will be led by Luca Salsi, alongside Ain Anger, Roberto De Candia, Eleonora Buratto, Anita Hartig, Charles Castronovo, and Matteo Lippi. The production, directed by Daniele Abbado, will be conducted by Lorenzo Viotti. The performances are scheduled from February 1 to 24, 2024.


"Mozart’s "Die Entführung aus dem Serail" will star Sven-Eric Bechtolf, Jessica Pratt, Jasmine Delfs, Daniel Behle, Michael Laurenz, and Peter Rose. Thomas Guggeis will conduct the production directed by Giorgio Strehler. The performances are scheduled from March 10 to 25, 2024.


Rossini's "Guillaume Tell" will feature Dmitry Korchak, Michele Pertusi, Nahuel Di Pierro, Evgeny Stavinsky, Marina Rebeka, and Martina Russomanno. Michele Mariotti will conduct the production directed by Chiara Muti. The performances are scheduled from March 20 to April 10, 2024.


Puccini's "La Rondine" will be directed by Irina Brook and conducted by Riccardo Chailly. The cast includes Mariangela Sicilia, Rosalia Cid, Matteo Lippi, Giovanni Sala, and Pietro Spagnoli. The performances are scheduled from April 4 to 20, 2024.


Mario Martone will direct "Cavalleria Rusticana" and "Pagliacci" with Giampaolo Bisanti conducting. Elīna Garanča, Ekaterina Semenchuk, Francesca Di Sauro, Brian Jagde, Amartuvshin Enkhbat, and Elena Zilio will star in Mascagni's work, while Irina Lungu, Fabio Sartori, Amartuvshin Enkhbat, Jinxu Xiahou, and Mattia Olivieri will take the stage for Leoncavallo's piece. The performances are scheduled for later in the season.


The opera "Don Pasquale" by Donizetti will feature Ambrogio Maestri, Andrea Carroll, Lawrence Brownlee, and Mattia Olivieri in the lead roles. Evelino Pido will conduct the production directed by Davide Livermore. The performances will take place from April 16 to May 5, 2024.


Benjamin Bernheim will star in Massenet's "Werther" alongside Jean Sébastien Bou, Victoria Karkacheva, and Francesca Pia Vitale. Alain Altinoglu will conduct the production directed by Christof Loy. The performances are scheduled from May 11 to June 4, 2024.


Anna Netrebko will take the stage in Puccini's "Turandot" alongside Yusif Eyvazov, Roberto Alagna, Vitalij Kowaljow, and Rosa Feola. The production will be directed by Davide Livermore, with Daniel Harding as the conductor. The performances will be held from June 25 to July 15, 2024.


"Il cappello di paglia di Firenze" by Nino Rota will be conducted by Donato Renzetti and directed by Mario Acampa. The performances are scheduled from September 4 to 18, 2024.


Antonio Cesti's "L'Orontea" will be directed by Roberto Carson and conducted by Giovanni Antonini. The cast includes Stéphanie d'Oustrac, Mirco Palazzi, Francesca Pia Vitale, Hugh Cutting, Luca Tittoto, Sara Blanch, Marianna Pizzolato, Carlo Vistoli, and Maria Nazarova. The performances will take place from September 26 to October 5, 2024.


"Der Rosenkavalier" by Strauss will star Krassimira Stoyanova, Günther Groissböck, Kate Lindsey, Johannes Martin Kränzle, and Sabine Devieilhe. Kirill Petrenko will conduct the production directed by Harry Kupfer. The performances are scheduled from October 12 to 29, 2024.


Sir David McVicar will direct Wagner's "Das Rheingold" with Christian Thielemann as the conductor. The cast includes Michael Volle, Andrè Schuen, Norbert Ernst, Johannes Martin Kränzle, Wolfgang Ablinger-Sperrhacke, Jongmin Park, Ain Anger, Okka von der Damerau, Olga Bezsmertna, Christa Mayer, Andrea Carroll, Svetlina Stoyanova, and Virginie Verrez. The performances will take place from October 28 to November 10, 2024.


 

CONCERTS


Under the baton of Riccardo Chailly, there will be performances of works by Verdi and Schubert. The concert dates are set for November 9-14, 2023.


Ingo Metzmacher will conduct a program featuring Luigi Nono and Shostakovich, with soloists Serena Saenz and Pierre-Laurent Aimard. The performances are scheduled for January 22-25, 2024.


Marlis Petersen joins forces with Riccardo Chailly for a performance showcasing the music of Schönberg, Webern, and Berg. The concert dates are May 27-30, 2024.


Mozart's Requiem will feature Rosa Feola, Cecilia Molinari, Giovanni Sala, and Adam Plachetka, conducted by Daniel Harding. The performances will take place from June 29 to July 5, 2024.


Camilla Nylund, Andreas Schager, and Okka von der Damerau will lend their voices to Schönberg's Gurre-Lieder. The concert dates are set for September 13-17, 2024.


 

RECITALS


Juan Diego Florez and Vincenzo Scalera will present a recital featuring music by Rossini, Donizetti, Bellini, and Verdi. The performance is scheduled for December 18, 2023.

Christian Gerhaher and Gerold Huber will deliver a recital focused on the works of Brahms. The performance date is February 5, 2024.


Elīna Garanča and Malcolm Martineau will enchant the audience with a recital featuring music by Brahms, Berlioz, Saint-Saëns, Gounod, Tchaikovsky, Rachmaninov, and Chapí. The performance is scheduled for March 11, 2024.


Roberto Alagna and Jeff Cohen will collaborate on a recital showcasing music by Wagner, Massenet, Verdi, Leoncavallo, Moniuszko, Tchaikovsky, Pergolesi, and Saint-Saëns. The performance date is June 23, 2024.


 

SPECIAL EVENTS


The Christmas Concert will be conducted by Daniel Harding and is scheduled for December 23, 2023.


On February 8, 2024, Les Musiciens du Louvre and Marc Minkowski will lead a performance of Handel's "Alcina," featuring soloists Magdalena Kozena, Erin Morley, Elizabeth Deshong, Anna Bonitatinus, Valerio Contaldo, and Alex Rosen.


Lisette Oropesa and Benjamin Bernheim will perform French Arias by composers Donizetti, Gounod, Meyerbeer, Massenet, and Rossini, with Marco Armiliato as the conductor. This concert is set to take place on April 29, 2024.


Beethoven's Symphony No. 9 will be conducted by Riccardo Chailly, featuring Olga Bezsmertna, Wiebke Lehmkuhl, Benjamin Bruns, and Markus Werba. The performance date is May 7, 2024.

Verdi's Requiem will star Marina Rebeka, Vasilisa Berzhanskaya, Freddie de Tommaso, and Alexander Vinogradov, with Riccardo Chailly as the conductor. The performance is scheduled for May 23, 2024.


William Christie will lead a performance of Purcell's "The Fairy Queen" on June 30, 2024.


Anna Netrebko and Jonas Kaufmann will perform a Puccini concert conducted by Riccardo Chailly, taking place on November 29, 2024.


 

CHAMBER MUSIC


Julija Samsonova-Khayet will join members of the Teatro alla Scala orchestra for a chamber music performance featuring works by Respighi, Ravel, and Faure. The date for this performance is February 25, 2024.


Barbara Rita Lavarian and Maria Miccoli will collaborate with members of the Teatro alla Scala orchestra, presenting works by Halvorsen, Boccherini, and Pergolesi on March 24, 2024.


Alberto Malazzi will conduct members of the Chorus in a program featuring works by Brahms, Holst, Rheinberger, and Andres, scheduled for April 28, 2024.
